Frequently Asked Questions
No. Dentures are not easy to wear. Dentures are prosthetic devices meant to help people who don’t have teeth. Just like a prosthetic leg helps an amputee, dentures can help a person with no teeth chew and smile, but nothing can fully replace a missing part of your body. Upper dentures cover your palate and make food hard to taste. Lower dentures move around and make chewing frustrating. Having a well fitting denture helps, but you should expect to have a period of adjustment when going from natural teeth to dentures.
A healing denture, also known as an immediate denture, is a temporary denture designed to wear the same day you have your teeth removed. When teeth are removed, the gums will swell. The healing denture controls the swelling and guides the shape of the ridge. Once healing begins, the gums and bone will begin to shrink. and the healing denture will feel too big. At this stage, the denture should be adjusted and a soft liner should be placed which makes the denture tight again. Several rounds of adjustments and soft liners may be needed depending on the amount of shrinkage experienced. After the shrinking has stopped, a permanent denture can be made which fits the new shape of the gums after the shrinking has taken place.
