New dentures can be a trying experience for some of our patients. Initially, dentures will feel strange and bulky, sometimes causing a fullness of lips and cheeks. These are symptoms that you will get used to over time. Patience and your will power will help in getting used to new dentures.
Slurred speech, gagging, excessive salivation and slight loss of taste will occur. This will usually disappear over time.
Learning to chew with your new dentures will take time. You will need to start with soft foods and gradually add other foods. You need to chew on both sides of your mouth, as this will stabilize your dentures. Do not bite into foods with your front teeth, as this will dislodge your dentures.
Sore spots on your gums will happen as the denture settles into your mouth. Warm salt water will help with the sore spots, but don’t hesitate to call the office at (903) 258-6099 to have those spots adjusted. There is no charge for these adjustments for the first 60 days, and a slight charge will occur after that.
At first, you may want to wear your dentures all the time, even at night, to adjust to them more quickly. After you become accustomed to your new dentures, you may want to take them out at night so you can follow a good cleaning routine.
Wearing dentures for the first time can be challenging. A denture does not function like natural teeth and it will be a new sensation that will take you a little time to adjust to the fit and feel.
